VAHPERD Family,

I have been drafting this email for what seems like weeks. This is a time of uncertainty for all Health and Physical Educators, filled with a lot of emotions and unknowns for the future. Monday, March 23rd was a historic day for Virginia. Our governor has closed schools for the remainder of the academic year. Even though schools are closed, VAHPERD supports continuity of learning for all students. Be patient and try not to be overwhelmed as we wait for guidance from the VDOE and Virginia Public School Systems regarding instruction moving forward. I want to share with you a few things that I know to be true.

  • This is just a season.  Personally, I must keep reminding myself of this. Listen and demonstrate the recommendations (from the CDC) to ensure this time isn't longer than it must be. It WILL get better
  • We are adaptable. As a profession, we adjust things all the time (and sometimes on the fly!) so I'm not surprised that a lot of you have stepped up right out the gate. As members of VAHPERD, I am proud of everyone for stepping up to meet the challenge. You're doing a GREAT job for your families and students. Have you seen the #HPEatHome tweets from @RayGrayPE and @JrV4Victory?! Awesome work guys!
  • We are resilient. Despite our feelings and emotions about the unknown - we keep pushing. We keep showing up! This community of educators ARE and WILL stand strong.  We will persevere through this difficult time together.

There are a variety of fabulous standard-driven resources and creative teachers thinking beyond the box! If you need help/suggestions with how, when, what, where, content, materials, resources, etc., please reach out to us on social media @vahperd with the #VaStrong. We would love to connect with you and help in any way we can!

Remember, we have the opportunity to do something spectacular as an association, as educators, as families, as individuals. We have the continued power to impact the lives of our students.

I recently heard that "only under tension will you see growth". This season of life and "tension" will not get the best of us. Together we will grow and only be better because of it. You are amazing and this profession NEEDS your special touch. Keep showing up and thriving! #BetterTogether

Stay safe and well!
