Sadly, 39,000 Virginia children between the ages of 13 and 18 don’t have health insurance. Many don’t think they need health insurance. Others can’t afford it. Most aren’t aware that, in Virginia, there is free state-sponsored health insurance (the FAMIS programs). DOE and the Virginia Health Care Foundation developed resources to inform teens, their families, coaches and key school staff about the FAMIS programs, including who is eligible, and how to enroll students. Here is how YOU can help your students, ensuring that they stay healthy and able to actively participate in classes, school clubs, and athletic activities.
